Evil Empire

On John McCain, in todays LA times: "His career since then (2000) has indeed resembled a certain famous Jedi. He began as a crusader for justice. Soon he realized that he needed to acquire more power in order to accomplish his noble goals. But over time, his pursuit of power became the goal itself, and by the end he lost his capacity to differentiate between right and wrong."

You burned me once, Anakin. I'm not getting duped again.

This, of course, opens up the field for a new Luke, someone who still believes in the ideals that, supposedly, are at the heart of the Republican party, but still has the courage to rail against all the terrible injustice that it has come to represent. On Monday, Chuck Skywalker is announcing (hopefully) that he's gonna challenge look-at-me-i'm-a-big-baby Guiliani. Could Hagel usurp power from the backwards Republican base by running a "Bush is the worst president ever" campaign? Probably not, but that would be some exciting politics. But, even assuming McCain is DOA, and Rudy somehow covers up the fact that he is such a terrible person that the people who made his career--firefighters-- and his own son dont even want him to be elected, the question is this: can he honestly spend the next two years defending his support not only for this war, but for an escalated version of it, and have an Irishman's chance in hell of getting more electoral votes than even Bloomberg will on his I'm Rich, Bitch ticket? Is there any republican besides for Hagel who can be taken seriously?

Wait til monday.
